This week’s pet is Oberon, a turtle belonging to Erinn of Marquette



Oberon is a red eared slider turtle. We think he is about 5 or 6 years old, but we have had him for about 2 years now. We wanted to buy a turtle, but just couldn't find any that we really liked. A friend of ours told us that his roommate had left his turtle behind when he moved, and that we could have take him if we wanted to. When we got him, he was in a very small tank with about 5 other HUGE fish, so when we put him in our tank it must have been like a lake! He didn't know how to swim because in his last home he didn't need too. We would put him in the tank and he would just "plop" right to the bottom It was sad, but cute too! Slowly, but surely he learned to swim and climb on his rock to sunbathe.

Oberon's favorite pastimes are sunbathing or taking a bath in the filter's waterfall. He also likes to hunt fish. We put about 15 little fish into his tank at a time and he swims around the tank trying to eat them as fast as he can. It used to take him about 3 weeks to finish off the 15 fish, probably because he couldn't swim well. But just last time we put the fish in, watched him eat about 4 of them and went to bed. When we woke up the next morning, they were all gone! He only has one fish that he has kept since last August in his tank. We aren't sure if he isn't eating it because they are friends now or because the fish is just too big to eat now. Besides fish, his favorite snack is romaine lettuce!

I wanted to nominate Oberon because I thought it'd be fun to have a unique pet as the pet of the week. And wanted to tell our story of Oberon.
