May 5 – 31, 2008
The Annual Exhibit of Mqt. County High School Student Artwork will be on display at the Oasis Gallery from May 5-31.  The gallery is located at 130 W. Washington St. in Marquette.  A public reception will take place on Friday, May 9th from 7-9 pm.  Any high school student living in Mqt. County may have the opportunity to enter up to three works of art.  This is a juried show.  Please drop off work on Friday, May 2 or Saturday, May 3.  For more information, contact Joy Bender-Hadley at 362-5510, or email auroraart@aol.com.

Bell Hospital History Book
The Bell Foundation has formed a committee to develop a history in story and picture of Bell Hospital.  The committee is seeking contributions from the community to enhance the publication, which will be available during the grand opening of the replacement facility in the fall.  Items of interest include:  personal stories of the hospital, (either as an employee, patient, visitor or neighbor) and pictures.  All pictures will be scanned and returned.  For more information or to submit a story or picture for consideration, contact Amy Poirier at 485-2119 or apoirier@bellmi.org.

In recognition of Brain Tumor Awareness Week, the Upper Michigan Tumor Center will host its third annual “Hope Starts Here Cycling Challenge” on Saturday, May 10.  Proceeds will support and promote awareness of the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center.  There will be two rides and walk this year, suitable for all ages and levels of ability.  Lunch will be served following the bike ride.  Participants may increase their contribution by collecting pledges as an individual or a team.  Brochure/registration forms can be picked up at Down Wind Sports, Lakeshore Bike, SportsRack and Marquette General Hospital’s Skywalk information desk.  Online registration can be completed at www.active.com.  The form can also be downloaded from www.hopestartshere.org.  On-line registration cut-off is May 1.  For more information, please call Laurie at the Marquette General Neuroscience Center at 225-4597 or 1-888-886-4644.

The Ishpeming High School Alumni Association will host its second annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser.  The dinner will be May 10th from 4–7 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ishpeming.  Tickets are $7 and will be available at the door, with children 6 and under free.  Proceeds from the dinner will help cover costs of the Association’s annual Open House in July.

Postal workers across Marquette County will be picking up food donations at residents’ mailboxes on Saturday, May 10th, for the 16th annual National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger!  Food Drive.  This nationwide event provides citizens the opportunity to donate nonperishable food to local agencies by leaving it at their mailboxes for letter carriers to pick up.  Glass containers or out-of-date items should not be included.   All collections will be brought back to the central post offices and divided up, then distributed to local agencies.  Marquette County residents are asked to clean out their pantries and consider buying extra when they shop to prepare for the May 10th food drive.

The 2nd Annual "BLUES FOR LIFE" Cancer Benefit will be held at the Lagniappe Cajun Creole Eatery in Downtown Marquette on Saturday, May 10th starting at 3:00 pm.  The motorcycle "Ride for a Cure" will culminate at the Jackson Cut Alley around 5:00 pm.  The ride-in will begin earlier in the day with a 'Blessing of the Bikes' at Bald Eagle Harley-Davidson in Marquette.  Also on the bill is a silent auction and door prizes.  A cash bar will be available.  All proceeds raised will go to the American Cancer Society for local cancer research and recovery programs.  Tickets are $25.00 and are available at the Screened Image, Lagniappe, and Bald Eagle Harley-Davidson.  For more information, contact Lorrie Hayes at 226-6112.

The YMCA of Marquette County is offering lacrosse as a new weekly program on Sundays, starting May 4th and ending on May 25th from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the River Park Sports Complex in Marquette.  Lacrosse is open to girls and boys ages 12-18 years olds. No experience is necessary.  Participants must bring the following equipment: helmets, mouth piece and gloves. "The Last Great Train Robbery" will be presented at the Peter White Library Community Room at 7:00 p.m.  Join Dick Rupley as he tells the tale of three masked men who boarded a Mineral Range passenger train on September 15, 1893 in Boston, Michigan to steal the monthly payroll for the Calumet & Hecla.  This was the first and only train robbery in the UP and one of the most lucrative that ever occurred in the US.  This event is part of the Marquette County History Museum Program Series; there is a $3.00 suggested donation.  Call the museum for more information at 226-3571.

Marquette resident and cancer advocate, Kris Kivela, will join the Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) to unite people affected by cancer and to raise awareness about cancer issues.  The event organized by Kris Kivela and the Sport's Rack Bike shop is one of 500 local LIVESTRONG Day events to be held across the country.  The event includes a family fun bike ride or walk from Marquette's Lower Harbor Park to and/or around The Island then back.  Participates will go at their own pace and distance.  The event will begin at 4:00 p.m. and conclude at dusk.  There will be door prizes including a Limited edition LiveSTRONG Hybrid BICYCLE by Trek and plenty of LiveSTRONG wristbands.  PLEASE WEAR YELLOW!  Come and have some fun for a good cause.

Mel Visser, author of Cold, Clear, and Deadly, will speak on his book at the monthly meeting of the C.U.P. Chapter of the Sierra Club cosponsored with the Peter White Public Library.  Visser’s book is both a mystery and the story of the evolution of its author: from a chemical and bioprocess scientist to the vice president in charge of a major company's corporate environmental division; to engaging in international research and travel to discover the source of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in cold northern waters ranging from the Great Lakes to the Arctic. Join Shirley Brozzo, Assistant Director of NMU's Multicultural Education and Resource Center, member of the Keweenaw Bay Tribe of Chippewa Indians, & adjunct professor with NMU's Center for Native American Studies, on Thursday, May 15 at 7:00 p.m. for a book discussion of Ernest Hemingway's Nick Adams Stories.  Brozzo's presentation will cover the racial discrimination within this series, especially when evaluated against today's standards.  Feel free to bring questions pertaining to the stories.  Held in the Shiras Room at the Peter White Public Library, the program is open to the public at no admission charge.

The 9th Annual Family Night event will be held on Thursday, May 15th from 5:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at Aspen Ridge Elementary School.  This year's theme is "In Our Own Backyard - Great Family Activities for all Seasons."  The Marquette County Convention & Visitor's Bureau will be out to highlight our area's unique and diverse family-centered opportunities.  Plenty of new activities as well as returning favorites are being planned to entertain and educate our elementary and preschool families.  A sampling of this year's exhibits/activities are:  the Ishpeming Township Fire Department, Kindergarten bus, Lucy Luge, YMCA, DNR, National Weather Service  and  our local museums.  Jubilee Foods will be providing free hotdogs again and many of our area's venues have generously contributed door prizes.  Come out and share a fun-filled family night.

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will present a beginners’ class on bird watching and wildflowers on Friday, May 16th from 7 a.m. to noon.  Naturalists Don and Mary Snitgen will teach attendees where to go, what to look and listen for, what binoculars work best and other tips for beginning birdwatchers.  Also, they will talk about looking for and identifying wildflowers.  Attendees will meet in the Berry Events Center east parking lot and carpool to areas along the Big Bay Road.  Participants are asked to wear appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes, and to bring bug repellant.  The class will be held regardless of the weather.  The cost for the class is $4 for NCLL members and $7 for nonmembers.  To register, contact class liaison Carole Bard at 228-9367 by Wednesday, May 14th.

The Glenn Miller Story, starring James Stewart and June Allyson, is the feature presentation at the Peter White Public Library on Friday, May 16, show time at 1:30 p.m.  Nominated for 3 Academy Awards, this color film premiered in 1953, runs for 113 minutes, and is a vibrant tribute to one of America's legendary bandleaders. Featuring a wonderful swing music score with music performed by the Glenn Miller Orchestra.   No admission charge. A kindergarten and pre-kindergarten visitation day will take place at Father Marquette Elementary School on Friday, May 16th.  Attend at 9:30 – 10:30 am … OR … 1:00 – 2:00 pm.  This is a time for child and parent to explore the classrooms at and to learn about the school’s afternoon enrichment program.  Plan on attending the full hour, if possible, as the teachers have many fun activities planned.  No need to call ahead – attend whichever session is convenient.  A parent or another adult must accompany the child.

The YMCA of Marquette County is holding a Parent's Night Out on Friday, May16th, for children in kindergarten through sixth grades.  The fun starts at 5:00 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m. This night allows parents some free time and gives kids a chance to swim, play games and create craft projects in a safe environment.  Children will be separated by ages to ensure a quality experience.  Everyone is asked to bring a towel and swimsuit.  The YMCA will provide a light snack.  Registration deadline for this night is Wednesday, May 14th.  The cost of this program is $11 for YMCA members and $22 for non-members.  For more information on Parent's Night Out, contact Melanee Ferrier at 227-9622.

A family-friendly, non-competitive bicycle tour is set for the City of Marquette Bike Path System on Saturday, May 17th.  The Marquette Uncommon Bike Tour will begin and end at the downtown Marquette Commons and will run 10 miles through the city, including the scenic Presque Isle Park.  The casual start will run from 8:30 until 10 a.m. and will finish by noon.  No racing is allowed.  The course will be well marked and there will be a rest stop with water and snacks at the Presque Isle Park.  Each rider will receive a commemorative water bottle and there are a variety of door prizes that will be given away.  All riders must wear a helmet.  Riders under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.  Registration is $10 for a family and $5 for an individual. White Water, one of Northern Michigan’s most popular recording groups, will perform in concert at the Michigan Iron Industry Museum, in Negaunee Township, during a public open house from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., on Sunday, May 18.  Performances are scheduled at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.  The concerts kick off a summer-long series of museum activities.  Light refreshments will be served.  Tickets to help cover the cost of the performances are $7 per adult, $3 ages 5-12 and free for children under 5.  Seating is limited.  Tickets may be purchased at the museum in advance or at the door while quantities last.  The recently expanded museum is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through October 31.  For more information about museum programs call 475-7857 or visit www.michigan.gov/ironindustrymuseum.

The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will present a seminar titled “Evolution of the U.P. 200 Sled Dog Races.”  It is scheduled from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, in the Mead Auditorium of NMU’s West Science Building.  Presenters will be Dick and Lou Ann Balding, the race’s official timekeeper and one of the original three organizers of the U.P. 200, respectively.    An overview with slides, photographs and other informational pieces will give a brief history of how the races started and how interested mushers and their sled dogs are solicited.  The cost for the presentation is $4 for NCLL members and $7 for nonmembers. The Northern Center for Lifelong Learning will hold its annual meeting from 6:30-7 p.m., Thursday May 22, at the Marquette Mountain Ski Lodge.  Light refreshments will be served and voting for new members for the board of directors will take place.  A presentation on the history of Marquette Mountain will follow the meeting at 7 p.m. Bob Brebner, one of the original developers, will give the presentation.  Marquette Mountain is a major area attraction and economic asset to the community.  Brebner will tell the story of how the ski hill evolved from Cliff’s Ridge to the present-day Marquette Mountain.  The event is free. “Colors of Summer” is a beautifully done show covering the summer sky.  You will learn about the summer sky constellations, phenomena, and the many colors that stars come in.  “The StarGazer” follows Dr. James Kaler on his quest to understand the stars.  Learn about gravity and the life cycle of stars, while receiving visits from astronomers of the past.  This show is loaded with full dome special effects.

The Gwinn Area Community Schools announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program for Children.  Free meals will be made available to children up to 18 years of age and persons up to age 26 who are enrolled in an educational program for the mentally or physically disabled that is recognized by a State or local public educational agency.  Meals will be provided at the Salvation Army Building, 302 Explorer Avenue in Gwinn, from 11:30 a.m. –12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday between June 9th and August 22nd.  (No meals will be served on July 4th)  For more information, call 346-9283.
