Michael Haynes is the new NICE Community Schools Superintendent. Last night in a special meeting, the school board reviewed and approved Haynes' contract. His base salary is $95,000 per year, plus benefits.  Haynes came from downstate East Jordan where he was a middle school principal. Haynes replaces retiring Superintendent, Henry Bothwell. Bothwell will stay on the job through the end of June to help with the transition.

Congressman Bart Stupak is warning citizens of phone and Email Scams regarding your Economic Stimulus Rebate Payment. According to the IRS, some people have received phone calls about the economic stimulus payment, in which the caller impersonates an IRS employee. The caller asks the taxpayer for their Social Security and bank Account numbers, claiming that the IRS uses the information contained on the taxpayers tax return to process the stimulus payments. The email says the same thing, but it asks you to fill out a form. DON’T DO IT. Everything you need, you have already taken care of, by filling out your tax returns.

The Marquette Electricians were notified Wednesday that their membership in Midwest Elite Hockey League was terminated. Marquette Electricians. The Marquette Electricians and the Soo Indians were both told that because they did not provide Tier I programs from 12 years old and under thru Midget Major, that they did not qualify for the newly aligned Midwest Elite Hockey League.  The Midwest Elite Hockey League will now consist of 20 teams from throughout the United States.  There will be 4 divisions with 5 teams in each division. The Electricians are formulating plans to create a new league with several Midwest programs at the present time.

The Northern Michigan Music Department will present the Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera “The Gondoliers” tonight through Sunday at the Forest Roberts Theatre. Evening shows are scheduled for 7:30 tonight and Saturday night with matinees being held at 1pm on Saturday and Sunday. All tickets are $8 and are available only at the theatre.
