A 51-year old Munising man was rescued Saturday morning after he broke through the ice outside of Munising bay. The man was out ice fishing on the west side of Grand Island when he broke through the ice and was in the water for nearly 45 mine before rescuers from the Alger County Sheriff’s Department were able to get to him. Deputies utilizing ice rescue equipment and a hovercraft had to get across approximately 150 yards of open water to get to this man. He was retrieved from the icy water and then brought to shore by snowmobile where he we was taken to Munising Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.


Friday morning troopers from Michigan State Police Wakefield Post were dispatched to a snowmobile accident on Lake Gogebic near the Hoop N Holler bar. A group of six snowmobiler’s were traveling north on Lake Gogebic at a high speed, when a 37 year old man from Illinois failed to slow and struck a picnic table which was on the shore line. The male was ejected from the snowmobile and landed in the parking lot of the Hoop N Holler Bar. The subject was taken to Grand View hospital then transported to Duluth MN. He was charged with Operating While Intoxicated.


A semi-gasoline tanker from Green Bay crashed and rolled over on M-35 early Saturday morning. The crash happened at Evergreen Road, just north of the city of Menominee. Several houses had to be evacuated as the tanker lost between 40 to 80 gallons of gasoline on the ground.


The Michigan State Police Gladstone Post responded to a two-vehicle accident Friday morning on M-35 north of Rock. A pickup truck heading southbound struck a deer in the roadway. The driver of truck lost control of the vehicle crossed the centerline and went into the path of a vehicle heading northbound. 41-year old Dawn Lampinen of Rock was trapped in the vehicle, which needed the Jaws of Life. Lampinen was transported to Marquette General hospital where she later died from her injuries. The driver of the pick up truck is a 33-year old Gwinn man who was treated and released.


The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education Special Meeting planned for today has been cancelled. MAPS next regular board of education meeting is scheduled for Tuesday February 23rd at 5:30 in the Marquette Senior High School Library. Grade alignment will be among agenda items to be addressed by the Board at the next meeting.
