The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office continues its
investigation into an breaking an entering complaint at
a residence off of county road 476 near the Schwitzer
Basin. An unknown person or person entered two
residences on the same property lot removing weapons and
alcohol. The Sheriff’s Office is seeking any information
of these crimes from the public. If anyone observed any
suspicious activity or persons walking in the area of
County Road 476 near the Schwitzer public access site on
Tuesday they are being asked to contact the Sheriff’s
Office at 225-8434.
Wednesday evening, The Ishpeming Police officers
responded to a car versus bicycle personal injury
accident at the intersection of Empire and Fifth
streets. 48-year old Linda Jarvi of Ishpeming was
driving westbound on Empire Street when a bicycle being
ridden southbound by 12-year old Abbey Gitzel of
Ishpeming, did not stop at the stop sign and struck
Jarvi’s vehicle. Gitzel was found at fault for the
accident for failing to yield the right of way but no
citations have been issued.
Michigan law enforcement officers made more than 6,800
traffic stops and arrested 239 drunk drivers during the
July 4th Over the Limit Under Arrest Drunk driving
crackdown. Officers in 30 counties took part in the July
1-11 crackdown, which was coordinated by the Michigan
Office of Highway Safety Planning (OHSP) and funded by
federal traffic safety dollars. Grant-funded patrols
resulted in the apprehension of 46 fugitives, 28
drug-related arrests, 204 misdemeanors and 21 felony
arrests. Nearly 200 seat belt and child seat violation
tickets, over 1,000 speeding tickets, and more than
2,100 other traffic violation citations were also
written.
Downtown Marquette will be hosting several major events
this weekend, one of which will end up closing streets.
The Blueberry Festival takes place today in the 100
block of Washington Street and the 1 and 200 blocks of
south Front. Those streets will be closed until 6
tonight. The 52nd annual Art on the Rocks will then be
held Saturday and Sunday at Elwood Mattson Lower Harbor
Park. The outdoor art shows runs from 10 until 6
Saturday and 10 until 5 on Sunday.
