LOS ANGELES, CA  [Thursday Jul.6.2006]  /WMQT.com/ -- The Red Hot Chili Peppers issued a security alert yesterday, after learning of an online scam to deceive the band's fans.

According to the Chili Peppers' official website at www.redhotchilipeppers.com, an unauthorized website has been offering "free tickets" to the Red Hot Chili Peppers 2006 Summer Tour for the completion of a brief survey, which requests personal information including a social security number.

In an official post, the Chili Peppers warned fans about the scam and said they have not authorized that site. The band also said they will never ask fans for personal information like a social security number.

"Spoof emails and websites can be a major problem for unsuspecting Internet users," read the message from the Chili Peppers. "Claiming to [be] sent by a well-known company, Spoof email directs users to websites asking for personal information such as a social security number, or account password."

"Stay safe online by protecting yourself from spoof (fake) emails and websites," the Peppers cautioned fans. "Never enter sensitive personal information (such as your password, bank account, and social security numbers) in an email."
