Universal Sues MySpace
Music company takes strong stance on copyright violation

by Laura Katz

Jay-Z
NEW YORK, NY  [Monday Nov.20.2006]  /WMQT.com/ -- Universal Music Group is mad as hell and they're not going to take it anymore.

The company has decided to sue MySpace, citing copyright infringement. Both companies have been in talks for several months on the matter, but the discussion broke down late Thursday, according to reports. Although MySpace has taken recent action to reduce copyright violation,
artists like Jay-Z and Gwen Stefani are still having their work leaked online. MySpace referred to the Universal action as "meritless litigation."

A rep for UMG said, "Businesses that seek to trade off on our content, and the hard work of our artists and songwriters, shouldn't be free to do so without permission and without fairly compensating the content creators."
