U2, Paul McCartney, Pete Townsend Call For New Copyright Law
4,000 bands sign full page ad

U2
LOS ANGELES, CA  [Monday Dec.11.2006]  /WMQT.com/ -- U2, Kaiser Chiefs, Maximo Park, and about 4,000 other bands have taken out a full page newspaper ad calling for the improvement of British copyright law.

The ad, which appeared in the Financial Times, stated "We call upon the UK Government to support the extension of copyright in sound recordings."

Right now the UK copyright limit is at 50 years, while the U.S. holds it at 95. The British Phonographic Industry was pushing to have the rules changed to get up to speed with the U.S., but that hope was dampened by the Gowers Report, which recommended that the extension not be granted.

PJ Harvey, Paul McCartney, Pete Townsend, and Paul Simonon of The Clash also signed the ad , which came out in Thursday's edition of the paper.
