Georgia DJ's Arrested for Selling Illegal Mixes
RIAA helps police raid offices

by Laura Katz

Gnarls Barkley
ATLANTA, GA  [Friday Jan.19.2007]  /WMQT.com/ -- Two well-known Atlanta DJ's have been arrested on suspicion of selling pirated CD's

Police raided DJ Drama and DJ Don Cannon's Morrow, GA offices on Tuesday, detaining 17 people, and seizing $500,000 worth of illegal CD's and other assests. They came up with about 81,000 "Gangsta Grillz" mixes, featuring artists like Gnarls Barkley, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera and Michael Jackson.

According to police, the DJ's were selling the professional-looking discs online and to independent retailers. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), who thoroughly investigates illegal music sales, had a hand in the take-down.

Both DJ Drama, a.k.a. Tyrie Simmons, and DJ Don Cannon were denied bail. Morrow Police Chief Jeff Baker said, "We did lock up two DJ's because they knew exactly what they were doing."

Last year alone, Atlanta authorities seized almost a million illegal CD's.
