Kanye Wins Battle With 50 Cent
No word on whether Curtis will keep his promise

by Laura Katz

50 Cent
LOS ANGELES, CA  [Thursday Sep.20.2007]  /WMQT.com/ -- Will 50 Cent put his money where his mouth is?

Fans are waiting to find out if the rapper will follow through with his threat to retire as a solo artist, now that his album "Curtis" has been outsold by Kanye West's "Graduation."

According Nielsen SoundScan, "Graduation" sold 957,000 copies in its first week in stores, while "Curtis" sold 691,000. To be fair, both those numbers have beat out Linkin Park's "Minutes to Midnight" for best debut. It sold 623,000 copies when it debuted in May.

So far, 50 hasn't mentioned anything about fulfilling his promise to quit. He said in a statement, "I am very excited to have participated in one of the biggest album release weeks in the last two years. Collectively, we have sold hundreds of thousands of units in our debut week. This marks a great moment for hip-hop music, one that will go down in history."

West said of his win, "To be a champion, you've got to take out a champion."
