Gwen's Pimple Furrows Brows
HDTV viewers get more than they bargained for.

No Doubt
DETROIT, MI  [Thursday Mar.11.2004]  /WMQT.com/ -- The recent Academy Awards show was a real eye-opener for Hollywood makeup artists who saw the red-carpet walk on high-definition television for the first time. HDTV, with images five times sharper than those on a regular TV set, exposed every wrinkle, every blotch, and every pimple a normal television wouldn't be able to pick up. Makeup artists commented on Gwen Stefani's forehead pimple that stood out like a maraschino cherry on a mountain of whipped cream, Jamie-Lee Curtis's crow's feet and Michael Douglas's rapid skid into geriatrics.

"In HDTV, you're seeing everything," says Tommy Cole, a veteran Hollywood makeup artist. Makeup cannot be caked on as before because the heavy layers are obvious. To compensate, many makeup artists are actually airbrushing foundation over a star's face to hide scars and blemishes. One television analyst is even predicting that the preponderance of HDTVs in America will affect "most beautiful" lists, as certain celebrities will never be able to conceal their imperfections, even with airbrushing.
