McLachlan Best When Bummed
Says she wishes it wasn't so.

by Ellen Sawyer

Sarah McLachlan
DETROIT, MI  [Tuesday Mar.16.2004]  /WMQT.com/ -- Sarah McLachlan says she does her best work when she's depressed, unfortunately. As the singer gets older, she says she's experiencing new depths of emotion, places she's never been before. "Sadly, for me, creativity comes more from the bad than the good, but I don't want to be miserable; I like being happy. Move on and don't beat yourself up - I tell myself that every day."

She's not the only one to recognize the power of her music to move one to the bummer zone. During the infamous affair of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinski, the intern scribbled a little billet-doux to her favorite hunk of man-meat which said: "When I was hiding out in your office I noticed you had the new Sarah McLachlan CD. I have it too, and it's wonderful. Song five is guaranteed to put me in tears when it comes to you."

McLachlan says she's basically a happy person in spite of all the evidence to the contrary, saying, "People assume I'm going to be this dour, miserable person because my lyrics are dark at times, but it's what I'm drawn to." Hey, whatever sells. Sarah's current single "Fallen" from her album "Afterglow" continues to climb the charts. Lose the Zoloft, Sarah, you're doing great.
