Legendary DJ now subject of film.
DETROIT, MI [Tuesday Apr.13.2004] /WMQT.com/ -- Rockers the world over are singing the praises of LA DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, now the subject of a documentary by George Hickenlooper called "Mayor of the Sunset Strip."
Bingenheimer was hired by Los Angeles radio station KROQ in the mid-seventies and was the first to play artists like the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, Van Halen, Nirvana, and Beck. The DJ later opened a nightclub in LA called Rodney Bingemheimer's English Disco, which became a home away from home for visiting rock stars like David Bowie and Led Zepplin.
Dozens of rock icons pay tribute to Rodney in the film and in real life. Among them, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, who recently described Bingenheimer as "an underrated legend."
