LOS ANGELES, CA  [Monday Oct.11.2004]  /WMQT.com/ -- In a statement released Friday, October 8, it was announced that Melissa Etheridge has cancer.

The 43-year-old Etheridge was diagnosed with breast cancer and will undergo surgery and treatment. According to the singer's publicist, Etheridge's doctor expects a "speedy and complete recovery" as a result of early detection and treatment.

In a statement Etheridge said, "I am fortunate to be under a wonderful doctor's care and thankful that this was caught early." She added, "I am looking forward to a quick and full recovery."

Because Etheridge must undergo surgery and treatment, she has canceled upcoming tour dates. According to her official Web site, Etheridge will rest and recuperate at home with her wife and children.

Fans with concert tickets can obtain refunds at the point of purchase. Etheridge had planned a short tour in support of her latest album, "Lucky."
