Live 8 Takes The World Stage July 2
150 bands to play historic Live 8 anti-poverty concerts.

PHILADELPHIA, PA  [Friday Jul.1.2005]  /WMQT.com/ -- Live 8 -- the biggest concert event in history -- takes place tomorrow, July 2, and more than 150 artists are performing and urging the eight most powerful politicians in the world "to stop 30,000 children dying every single day of extreme poverty."

The free Live 8 concerts will occur simultaneously in nine cities around the world including Philadelphia, London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Johannesburg, Moscow, Toronto, Tokyo. Two million people are expected to attend the shows, while three billion people will either watch the concerts on television or online, or hear them broadcast on the radio.

Live 8 is being staged to encourage the leaders of the eight most powerful and wealthiest countries in the world to agree to a plan to fight extreme poverty, AIDS and corruption in Africa.

Some of the biggest names in music will perform at Live 8. Confirmed artists include U2, Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Destiny's Child, Dave Matthews Band, Jay-Z, Coldplay, Green Day, Madonna, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Toby Keith, REM, The Killers, Sting, Bjork, Maroon 5, Audioslave, Duran Duran, Pink Floyd, Angelique Kidjo, Youssou N'Dour, and many more.

In the US, the Live 8 broadcast begins on AOL and MTV at noon, ET on July 2. A special two-hour segment of taped highlights will also air that day on ABC at 8 pm ET / 7 pm CT.
