Green Day plays classic Queen cover at Live 8.
BERLIN, GERMANY [Tuesday Jul.5.2005] /WMQT.com/ -- Among the many highlights of last weekend's Live 8 shows was Green Day's performance of Queen's "We Are the Champions."
Billie Joe Armstrong -- dressed in black and wearing white armbands reading "Make Poverty History" -- led the audience in a stirring sing-along of the Queen classic.
In its cover of "We Are the Champions," Green Day not only paid tribute to Queen, but also referenced the Live Aid concerts staged back in 1985. Freddie Mercury and Queen played the rock anthem at the London show, and the performance was considered one of the show-stopping moments of those African famine relief concerts.
About 100,000 people attended the July 2nd Berlin Live 8 show, which also featured performances from Audioslave, Brian Wilson, Lauryn Hill and Roxy Music.
