SANTA MONICA, CA [Tuesday Oct.4.2005] /WMQT.com/ -- Gwen Stefani has just made music and digital history.
Stefani's hit song "Hollaback Girl" -- off her solo debut "Love. Angel. Music. Baby." -- has sold 1 million commercial digital downloads, more than any other recording in the digital age.
Interscope Records made the landmark announcement yesterday (October 3rd) and said that purchases of "Hollaback Girl" have been averaging around 15,000 downloads per week.
Not only is Stefani's 'Hollaback Girl' an extremely popular music digital download. It's also a huge seller for telephones. Interscope says that 'Hollaback Girl' will soon cross the 1 millionth mark in mastertone sales, which are downloads to mobile telephones.
So how does Stefani feel about making history?
"It's always an honor to be recognized for your music, and this is really the coolest," said Stefani in a statement. "It's exciting to see people embrace the song and really make it part of their lives. Whether it's cds, computers, or cellphones...it really is bananas."
Jimmy Iovine, Chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M, a unit of Universal Music Group (UMG), added, "Gwen is one of the most forward-thinking and innovative artists in music today. That she would make history with digital downloads just emphasizes her role as a leader in so many ways for a new generation and for music."
Iovine also commented, "The music industry is changing and this is a major sign that digital downloading has reached the mass market and become a very significant business."
