LOS ANGELES, CA  [Thursday Feb.9.2006]  /WMQT.com/ -- U2, John Legend, Kanye West, Mariah Carey and Kelly Clarkson were among the winners of the 48th Annual Grammy Awards held last night in Los Angeles.

U2 was the night's biggest winner, taking home five awards including Album of the Year and Best Rock Album for "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb," Song of the Year and Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal for "Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own," and Best Rock Song for "City Of Blinding Lights." The Irish rockers also delivered an energetic performance of "Vertigo" followed by "One" -- off the band's album "Achtung Baby" -- which U2 performed with Mary J. Blige.

Steve Lillywhite, who produced U2's "How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb," won the Grammy for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical.

It was three Grammys for R&B singer and pianist John Legend, who won Best New Artist, Best R&B Album for "Get Lifted," and "Best Male R&B Performance" for "Ordinary People." Kanye West also scored three awards, winning Best Rap Album for "Late Registration," Best Rap Solo Performance for "Gold Digger" and Best Rap Song for "Diamonds From Sierra Leone."

Mariah Carey crowned her comeback year with three Grammy Awards including Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for "We Belong Together," and Best Contemporary R&B Album for "The Emancipation of Mimi."

Kelly Clarkson was perhaps the most stunned Grammy recipient. The original American Idol winner bested Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, Sheryl Crow and Bonnie Raitt to win the Best Female Pop Vocal Performance Grammy. Clarkson held back tears as she accepted the award, saying "You have no idea what this means to me." Clarkson also won Best Pop Vocal Album for her latest disc, "Breakaway."

The Grammy for Record of the Year went to Green Day for the song "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," off the band's critically acclaimed and hugely successful album "American Idiot." In his acceptance speech, singer and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong alluded to Green Day's chart-crossing success, saying "Pop radio playing Rock music is a very big deal to me."

Some of the night's other Grammy winners included the Gorillaz and De La Soul for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals for "Feel Good Inc.", Bruce Springsteen for Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance for the song "Devils & Dust," and the White Stripes for Best Alternative Album for "Get Behind Me Satan."
